Facebook forces drag queens to use birth names in their profiles

gaywrites:

Facebook has been cracking down on people using nicknames or stage names on their profiles. And as a result, some drag queens are being forced to either change their names or give up their online followings.

Several drag performers — including members of the renowned Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — have been locked out of their Facebook accounts because they don’t use their birth names on their profiles. Facebook suggests they use their birth name on their personal account and set up “fan pages” for their drag personas. Here’s why that’s an issue for them:

In the case of the Sisters, these are not necessarily performers with fan bases but more a community of people who identify by these alternate names in public more often than not. In the case of drag queens, many already have fan pages but have found those to be less reliable ways of promoting themselves than friend networks, which in most cases they’ve taken years to build.

Also there are the cases of people who have chosen to use alternate names, or pseudonyms, on Facebook precisely because they don’t want to be found there by employers, family members, or nosey journalists.

The interesting thing is that Facebook’s reasoning is that they want to “help keep our community safe,” but this could actually make conditions extremely unsafe for a number of individuals. And, as one performer said, they don’t have “fans,” they have friends. What say you?

This honestly made me tear up. Imagining how great he must have felt that his planned worked and choosing that risk paid off.
I also feel like him and the model have such good chemistry, they’re always so kind and loving to one another.

Holy shit what did he do?? That’s rad as hell!

Since the runway was going to have simulated rain, he wanted to make the outfit become colorful because of it rather than deflect it. He sewed dye into the seams and once the rain hit it the dye ran! Very simple but super effective. He was one of the two winners of that challenge.

Absolutely brilliant. Holy shit.

Oh my god I love project runway so much
